Lowden park grant funding and improvements

Trinity County was recently awarded a per-capita grant allocation from the California Department of Parks and Recreation, proposition 68. Multiple special districts were included with their own allocations as well. These parks include Lewiston Community Park (Lewiston Community Services District), Hayfork Park (Greater Hayfork Valley Parks & Rec Dist.), Junction City Park (The North Fork Grange), Lee Fong Park & Weaverville Pool (Weaverville/Douglas City Parks & Rec Dist.), and Lowden Park (Trinity County General Services). You may reach out to your neighborhood district/park representatives for more details related to your area. Some improvements are already in progress!

General Services’ Lowden Park plan includes replacement of the last section of the wooden play structure and the addition of ADA play equipment. Also included on the agenda is an addition of an ADA picnic area, tying into the main lawn bathrooms sidewalk, focusing on ease of access for all ages/abilities. We are excited about the additions and renovations, and await the State’s approval of proposed plans.

There are other funding opportunities through prop 68. The Regional Park Program (RPP) will award $3,000,000 to qualified applicants and announce the winners in spring, 2022. General Services in partnership with Trinity Trail Alliance is preparing an application for many upgrades and additions with Trinity County Grant writer, Suzi Kochems. This will include completion of the Trinity Bike Park, Phase ll. Concept plans include three dirt trails of varying difficulty (Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced) and will follow the natural contours of the site. There will be a variety of technical riding features such as wall-rides, wooden ramps, and natural surface riding features such as tabletops, gap jumps, large berms, and rollers.

General Services will include in the grant application renovation of the existing Tennis Courts with professional installation of regulation Pickle Ball. This is a hot new sport and popping up in many parks. Additional items include a custom outdoor multi-goal basketball hoop/backboard, repaving of the walking/driving path around the main lawn, additional T-ball infield next to the George Deal Field, Dog Park to be located in the natural area, updated lighting for the Scatena Field, updated concessions/event camping power pedestals, and drinking fountains near the bike park.

One of the qualifications for grant submission is seeking input from the community. That’s where you come in. We need your input. Public Meetings will be held on December 20, 2021 @ 12pm, and on January 05, 2022 @ 2pm. Location to be in the Trinity County Library Board Room. Zoom capability is offered for those not able to attend in person. Included is a survey.
