College Fee Waiver

The state of California offers tuition assistance to the dependents of some veterans. Applicants must meet state residency requirements.

Under this program, schools in the University of California, California State University, or California Community College systems shall not charge any mandatory systemwide tuition or fees, including enrollment fees, registration fees, differential fees, or incidental fees IAW the Education Code.
 
Application
 

Plan A (must meet one of the following)

  • Unmarried child (age 15 - 26)

    • Veteran must be totally service-connected disabled or whose death was officially rated as service-connected 

    • If the child is a Veteran, then the age limit is extended to age 30; 

    • Provide copy of birth certificate and Veteran service-connected disability award letter

  • Spouse (any age)

    • Veteran must be totally service-connected disabled and have wartime service

    • Provide copy of Marriage certificate, Veteran service-connected disability award letter and DD-214 proving wartime service

  • Unmarried surviving spouse (any age)

    • Veteran must have service-connected death and wartime service 

    • Provide copy of Marriage certificate and Veteran death certificate, service-connected disability award letter and DD-214 proving wartime service

  • Any dependent of Veteran declared missing in action, captured in the line of duty by hostile forces, or forcibly detained or interned in the line of duty by a foreign government or power

    • Provide proof of dependency and Veteran status

Plan B (must meet one of the following)

  • Child (any age)

    • Veteran must have a service-connected disability, service-connected death, or service-connected disability at the time of death. Wartime service is NOT required.

      • Provide copy Veteran service-connected disability award letter

    • Child's annual income must not exceed certain limits (based on previous calendar year's annual income)

Plan C (must meet one of the following)

  • Any dependent 

    • Veteran of California National Guard who

      • died in the line of duty while on active service to the state, or

      • died of a disability resulting from an event that occurred while in active service to the state, or

      • is permanently disabled as a result of an event that occurred while in the service to the state 

Plan D (must meet one of the following)

  • Medal of Honor recipients

  • Children of Medal of Honor recipients under the age of 27

    • ​​​​​​​Provide copy of birth certificate

    • ​​​​​​​Provide copy of DD-214 or other documentation 

    • Must not exceed income limits 

    • Undergraduate studies only
