Indigent Cremation

Trinity County (County) is authorized under the California Health and Safety Code §7100 and 7300 and the Welfare and Institutions Code §17009, to provide for cremations of indigent persons in Trinity County, and to assist the Next of Kin of deceased individuals in obtaining assistance when the Decedent and/or Next of Kin are unable to afford cremation and meet the requirements of applicable Trinity County policies.

Indigent cremation may be provided to eligible Trinity County residents or those who died in Trinity County, and assistance is provided to families who lack the income or resources to afford any type of funeral expenses and who meet applicable eligibility requirements under this Policy. All indigent cremation requests must have written approval by designated County staff prior to interment.

Funeral arrangements are made with Trinity Alps Funeral Home. The Funeral Home will provide an Indigent Cremation Assistance application packet to the Decedent’s Next of Kin if the family or Decedent appears to meet eligibility criteria and other funeral arrangements could not be made with Funeral Home. The Indigent Cremation Assistance Application must be approved by the County. Completed applications will be submitted to the County for eligibility determination by the Funeral Home, on the Applicant’s behalf, or by the Applicant. The Next of Kin will be considered the Applicant for assistance.
